Fertility and the Mind-Body Connection
Fertility issues are not simply a physical problem but the emotional and mental components need to be addressed as well. The very diagnosis of “unexplained infertility” says that there is nothing physically wrong that is getting in the way of conception. Instead this diagnosis itself creates the need for women to have an outlet for emotional healing.
Hypnosis and other mind-body techniques provide excellent complementary modalities for healing. The magical key to unlocking fertility is healing and processing the information deep in the subconscious mind. Whether your goal is to try to conceive naturally, or work with assisted reproductive techniques, addressing the subconscious mind is the most important part of achieving conception. Studies have indicated that women utilizing mind/body techniques like hypnosis have a 42-55% conception rate as compared to 20% with In Vitro Fertilization alone. Decreased levels of depression, anxiety and anger were also noted in the studies. A peaceful and calm mind creates a balanced and healthy body which is able to conceive much more successfully.
One possible issue for infertiltiy is fear around pregnancy and giving birth. That fear can, as the research by Howard and Martha Lewis in 1972 has shown, lead to the muscles surrounding the woman’s fallopian tubes contracting at the time of ovulation and preventing her from becoming pregnant. Her body directed by her subconscious is making conception impossible in a failed attempt to protect her as a response to her fear.
A study conducted at Yale University and published in “Fertility and Sterility” in 1985 looked at the importance of addressing emotional issues. The group that worked with a therapist on issues that were related to their fertility issues had a 60% conception rate, while the control group had a 11% pregnancy rate.
In 1993 another study published by Wasser, Sewall and Soules in “Fertility and Sterility” found that psychosocial distress contributes significantly to infertility, or in other words that stress is an important factor in “unexplained fertility” cases.
Also in 1993 a study published in “The Journal of Psychosomatic Research” examined the “mood state” as a factor. Women with elevated depression levels had less than half the conception success rate with undergoing IVF procedures.
Dr. Alice Domar, professor at Harvard Medical school, a leader in the field of fertility research, observed in “The Journal of Psychosomatic Obstetrics and Gynecology” in 1993 that women struggling to conceive “report equivalent levels of anxiety and depression as women with cancer, HIV status, or heart disease”.
According to an Israeli study conducted by Professor Eliahu Levitas and presented to the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology conference in Berlin in July of 2004, hypnosis can double the success of IVF treatments. The study of 185 woman found that 28% of the women who were hypnotized for the IVF treatment became pregnant, compared to 14% of the women in the control group.
How Can Hypnosis and PSYCH-K® Help?
Hypnosis affects the hypothalamus, the neural centre at the base of the brain linked to the pituitary gland, and controls the flow of hormones in the body. The hypothalamus is sensitive to stress and acts as a bridge between the emotional and physical, turning emotional messages into physical responses that affect hormone levels. Therefore, it is important to address the psychological issues surrounding pregnancy for fertility problems.
Low progesterone is one of the possible reasons for fertilty issues. During chronic stress, progesterone production is reduced as the body favors the production of cortisol to reduce stress. Stress can be addressed very successfully with hypnosis. Over the years of trying to conceive, some women have also adopted limiting and very stressful beliefs about themselves, and the natural ability of their body. Negative conditioning has taken place due to the limiting diagnosis and comments of medical workers, family and friends. With the help of Hypnosis and PSYCH-K®, those negative thoughts and beliefs can be replaced with positive, supporting beliefs to conceive successfully.
Hypnosis helps to eliminate negative self-talk, to get rid of fears and reduces stress and anxiety that stands in the way of a successful conception. It is a tool to put you back in control and help you regain the trust in yourself and in your body.
The goal of the program is not simply for you to become pregnant, but to enable you to attain personal empowerment. For only by doing so will you truly be able to let nature take its course. Through personal empowerment comes inner peace, the ability to accept, appreciate and embrace life. Hypnotherapy gives you your life back that you have put on hold during this process of wanting to conceive a baby.
With the help of hypnosis and PSYCH-K® the fears and frustrations you are feeling can be transformed into productive thoughts and emotions. These techniques enable you to achieve the relaxation and peace of mind necessary for a calm, positive and successful pregnancy.
